Xcel's Own PASE-Setter

The Partnership for After School Education (PASE) named Luis Velez, one of Xcel's co-founders, "Outstanding After School Educator" at an awards banquet in May. One of five recipients in New York to earn the prestigious award, Luis was recognized for co-founding Xcel at age 16 and working there since 1996, most recently as its recreation director. Among Luis' innovations are Group Club, Boot Camp Week, karate, and an emerging film program.

Luis will be leaving Xcel in January 2003 for a semester at the upstate campus of Nyack College, where he is working towards a degree in Christian Education. Loyal and devoted to the community and its kids, Luis is a living testimony of someone who has learned to excel in the face of adversity. Congratulations!
